French Onion Dip - A healthy version of a party favorite!
I love French onion dip! The flavor of caramelized onion compliments the tartness of sour cream and yogurt so perfectly.
But I don't love the ingredients in most mixes and flavoring packets.
This dip is a healtier version of a party favorite. And the best part is that it tastes amazing! It's sure to be a crowd-pleaser!
- Serves: multiple
- Prep time: 5 mins
- Cook time: 45 mins
Ingredients:
- 1 yellow onion
- 2 tbsp salted butter
- About 1/2 cup of broth/stock Note: chicken, beef, or vegetable stock or bone broth work here
- 1 cup of sour cream
- 1 cup of plain, full fat Greek yogurt
- 3 cloves of Confit Garlic, smashed in a mortar and pestle
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Slice onion into 2 inch strips (bite-size).
- Melt 2 tbsp butter in a sturdy bottomed pot over medium heat and add sliced onion.
- Cook, stirring occasionally to encourage the maillard reaction to brown the onion without burning.
- Deglaze the pot with broth in small increments. Here, you want to add enough broth/stock to release the caramelized bits from the bottom of the pan but not so much that the onions become soupy. This process will take about 45 minutes.
- After cooking, remove from the stove and let cool.
- Once fully cooled, add remaining ingredients, stir to combine, and serve immediately or refrigerate before serving.
Subs & Adds
- If you don't have Confit Garlic on hand, you can use garlic salt in place of the recommended salt to taste or add about 1/4 tsp of garlic powder.
