Chaffles: Versatile, Crunchy, Easy Bread Alternative
Chaffles are waffles made of cheese. The crunchy, cheesy, bready texture of the chaffles are the perfect texture.
Chaffles are so versatile, they can be eaten alone or with any number of pairings.
- Serves: 1
- Prep time: 1 min
- Cook time: about 5 mins
Ingredients
- 1/2 to 1 cup grated cheese
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Sprinkle grated cheese into your waffle iron. Virtually any grated cheese -pre-grated or grated fresh from a block- can be used here. Just don't use anything that is very wet like fresh mozzarella. How much to use (1/2 or 1 cup) depends on how finely grated the cheese is. I recommend starting with 1/2 cup if this is your first time making them.
- Heat waffle iron. The Chefman Waffle Iron is the best I've found. If your waffle maker has variable temperatures, these will cook best on a medium/low setting.
- Once the cheese begins to melt and sizzle, pour the beaten egg over top and and use a fork to spread it around in one even layer.
- Close waffle iron and cook. The length of time these will take to cook depends upon your waffle iron. I just keep an eye on these and remove them from heat when they start to smell like a toasty cheesy bagel. For my waffle iron, it takes about 5 mins.
